Oh wow, week 47…for real? What happened to the year? As always a grateful hat tip to Cate @ Moments of Whimsy for hosting this sharing of goals and resolutions for 2011. It’s been quite the ride.
I think it’s sort of appropriate then that the title of this post is “Finishing Touches” as this will likely be my last submission for Project 2011. It’s time to get ready shed this skin and welcome a whole new one, and yes I think having just turned 40 has something to do with my enthusiasm for a brand spankin’ new year.
But before I go, I said I would do a post about the finishing touches to my kitchen, some turning out much better than others.
First, and foremost for me, was the running water!
Next it’s the curtains…*sigh*
For all intents and purposes, they’re fine. They’re thick enough to keep the cold air out, their size is perfect and the colour scheme matches the paint and the counter top. The thing is, they’re too…uh, um…I don’t know what the word is but I know I’m not crazy about them.
They’ll stay for the winter because they’re practical but I can guarantee you I’ll be looking around for something more suitable. Good thing the panel only cost me a few dollars and I altered it myself. 😛
Next though is one my favourite finishing touches…
Cast iron “grape” hooks that I’m using to mount a couple of frying pans. I used to have my entire collection of frying pans mounted but with my new pots and pans drawer it’s no longer necessary. There’s a third one next to the stove where my potholders are hanging and the best part is that I paid only $2.50 ea for them.
So there you have it, my kitchen’s finishing touches brought to you by frugality, bargain hunting and doing it yourself.
Thanks for all you have been leaving comments in support of this big change. It’s helped a lot to keep me focused and on track. 😀
Now for something completely different…
Here’s Rosie sleeping on her “throne”. I know, it’s my fault for putting the blanket there…but the seat hurts my butt.
Have a good weekend everyone.

When everything is upside down and over turned
I become the someone for which I’ve always yearned
It’s funny how I find myself stronger than I ever thought
When confronted with situations that I never sought
Things just happen, life just sort of is
And I must like it this way
Because when I just go with the flow
It is always easier to know
That things just happen, life just sort of is
And I must like it this way
When life makes the least kind of sense
When I’m sure that there is no pretense
Things just happen and life just sort of is
And I must like it this way

THE BIG REVEAL…
Yup, the kitchen is in and, as I write this, Hubby is finishing up the plumbing. I’ve never been so excited to do dishes in my entire life. This will be the first of two posts, this one is just about the main differences and the next one will be about some of the finishing touches.
Here we go!
Here’s a before pic…
One more before…
Lookit, a pass that leads into the dining room. It’s awesome and I couldn’t be more pleased that a long time dream – opening the wall that separated the kitchen and dining room – has finally come true.
I’ve spent 13 years cooking Thanksgiving, Easter and Christmas dinners in the isolation of my cut off kitchen. People would come in with offers to help, which I accepted gratefully, but mostly I felt cut off from the socializing.
Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE to cook for my family and really enjoy hosting these holiday feasts. It’s just now it’ll be even better because I can do that AND be in on the party at the same time.
I’d love to show you guys more but I’m not quite done with all the fiddly bits and I still have about 2/3 of my stuff to put away. 1/3 of which I’m still hoping to pare down, sort and give away.
And frankly, I’m exhausted. Cate hon, I don’t know how you do it. 😉

Hubby teased when he texted me the pic and wrote, “It doesn’t fit!” Good for him that he came back right away with, “just kidding”…either way though, it wasn’t funny.
I’ve been without a functioning kitchen for nearly a week, my fridge and stove are squeezed into my dining room, there are pots and pans, dishes and utensils, food stuffs and plastic containers ALL OVER my house.
No, I didn’t think that was funny.
Nevertheless, Hubby and the cabinets arrive home tomorrow and we begin the task of building a kitchen. How cool is that? It’s like Lego for adults. 😀

Sort of anyway. The new subfloor is in and believe me, that’s a huge relief unto itself. Hubby never ceases to amaze me by what he’s willing to try. Granted, there have been one or two cringe worthy experiments over the last 18 years but mostly he does a good job even if it’s something he’s never done before.
Unfortunately, due to no fault of his own, the floor we were hoping to have fully installed before he left on his overnight jaunt to pick up the cabinets and countertops, is in fact only half done. Ah, the truth of any reno project…estimate how long you think it will take and tack on another week or two depending on the extent.
Hubby was up until about midnight last night screwing in almost one hundred screws to secure the 1/4″ plywood subfloor. There was no way he was going to be able to install the vinyl sheets before leaving this morning.
So he left about an hour ago and I excitedly waved him off knowing that the next time I see him, he’ll be bearing the gift of my new kitchen. I’m a very happy girl.
In the meantime, I’ll be puttering and tidying as well as finishing up priming under the window while I stare longingly at…
Really, at this point, there’s very little left for me to do except stand around and wait. Oh, and take pictures…lots and lots of pictures.

Well, we’re in mid reno now and 3 of the 4 walls are painted, phew. Now it’s just a matter of cleaning, repairing and painting the last wall and then it’s floor time.
Hubby had a heck of a time getting out the old sink cabinet…

I don’t know what unsettling me more, turning 40 in two days or this…
I have to unload the dishwasher and I, very literally, have no place to put the clean dishes. As it is I’m going to have to settle for laundry baskets or something. This is when I seriously wish I had a TARDIS (look it up) so I can just pop into next Sunday when it’s all done and I’m making coffee and french toast in my new kitchen.
But then there’d be two of me and that creates a time paradox which upsets the balance of the universe, yadda, yadda…stupid sensitive universe.
