Christmas and Commerce

Christmas is a joyous time of year, it is also very expensive.  I won’t digress and delve into what I think about all the unnecessary spending and just accept that it’s a reality of our current culture.  In any case, last year we decided to try something new in our family that would save everyone a lot of money.

We agreed that everyone over 18* would buy one non-gender specific gift worth no more than $10. We put them all in a box then later in the evening we each, in turn, drew a gift from the box. We made a rule that no one was allowed to SAY anything when someone else was picking, but it was a hoot to see the expressions and gestures we all made trying to veer each other it was like a game show.

It was so much fun and we’re doing it again this year.

*Grandkids (0ver 18) notwithstanding because Grampa bought them all their own gift anyway.  😛
