I believe a good test of any marriage is a major DIY home renovation project. No matter how much they agree on the end result, getting there often involves two different people with VERY different ideas as to how.
Case in point…meet Hedgezilla
Hubby: It’s got to go…it’s growing into the eaves and pushing on the roof.
Me: I agree. Let’s call someone.
A WEEK LATER:
Me: Did you call someone about the hedge?
Hubby: Oh yeah, I called BUDDY. He’s going to lend me his Dad’s chainsaw.
Hubby: But for now, I have this…
Me: A handsaw? (Le Sigh)
HOURS LATER: BUDDY with chainsaw showed up and in no time a knife fight become a battle of the electric sword.
All told this story actually spanned two days, I condensed it. The rest is not important. Hubby won the battle and didn’t lose any eyes.
He says it’s a combination of determination and will. I say it’s a combination of arrogance and luck. Either way, we got a big chunk of our house back. I can’t wait until it’s all finished and comes together.

“We’re what?” I asked Hubby incredulously. I wasn’t upset or even put off by the idea, I was just incredibly surprised.
“We’re hosting a Super Bowl party on Sunday.” We don’t follow, watch or even like football but okay.
Turns out that Hubby’s good buddy was planning to host but due to inclement weather conditions (we got snow from Friday evening until late Saturday) and buddy’s place being a 45 min trek out of town it was just easier to have it here.
In the end, it turned out to be more of a get together than a party.
Buddy and Wife came over and my BF and her two teen daughters came by. With me, Hubby and Daughter we only totaled eight people. Still, when you have to feed and clean up after that many, eight might as well be a band of Tolkien dwarves. 😀
It was a lot of fun though. We ate, we talked, we played darts, we ate, we talked, we listened to music, we ate, the teens watched a movie, Wife, BF and I did our nails and talked then we ate some more. There was wine and beer involved if I recall.
Oh, I also think there was some kind of sporting event being televised. 😉

Hubby is an IT consultant and is totally a self-made man. He taught himself what he needed to know in order to get people to pay to train him on what he didn’t. Clever monkey eh? For his entire career he worked long hours, spent weeks away from home and spent nearly a decade on-call wearing a beeper that summoned him into the office at any hour of the day or night.
It wasn’t easy for us as a family but the benefits increased with every new opportunity and we muddled through. We bought a house while we were still in our twenties and settled into our little piece of the North American dream. Eventually, we took out a home equity loan, a line of credit and leased a new car. That’s what everyone does, right?
Then, about 5 years ago, rather unexpectedly, Hubby lost his job and we were jolted awake into the very rude North American reality. Our bubble burst and we were facing the very frightening prospect of losing our home. We consolidated, reeled in our lifestyle, cut back expenses and ate Kraft dinner three times a week. Hubby took whatever jobs he could get and even delivered pizza in the evenings for a few months.
It worked and we were able to keep our house despite having to get a second mortgage worth 50% of the original asking price. Since then things are much better. Hubby got better and better contracts, debt was getting repaid and decreasing and we never fell back into the credit trap.
I give Hubby most of the credit for this of course because it is him out in the rat race busting his hump. But this weekend he told me that I am largely responsible for keeping us out of financial trouble. I asked him what he was talking about and he pointed at this…
I was confused. He asked how much I paid for it even though he knew full well because he was right there. “Three dollars,” I said.
He replied, “Exactly” and then kissed my forehead.
“Oh, okay I get it. You know though, I would have paid ten.”
“Maybe, but you wouldn’t have paid more than that. You would have walked away from it, not something that a lot of people can do, especially when they can actually afford it.”
“I never look at it that way and heaven help us if I ever do. As long as we have a mortgage, in my mind, we can’t afford it.”
“And that is why we won’t ever get into the same kind of trouble we did a few years ago.”
Personally, I think he gives me too much credit but who am I to argue. 😉

I woke up at 6:00 am this morning to Hubby snuggling in beside me. Awww sweet.
“Happy Anniversary,” we whispered to each other.
About an hour later, I asked what time they were heading out, trying to contain my glee. Hubby said about an hour and I hovered relentlessly making sure they had this, that they didn’t forget that, when really I was making sure that once they were gone, they were gone. Nothing spoils the first moments of shoulders down, deep breath and huge sigh like them walking back in the door ten minutes in.
And off I waved Hubby and Daughter on our 17th Wedding Anniversary, smiling, knowing this time to myself is the best present ever. Of course the fact that Comic Con was scheduled this weekend, well…happy coincidence. 😀
Then what did I do? Well friends…I rationalized myself into 2 loads of laundry, a load of dishes, prep for dinner tomorrow and did a general tidy of the main floor. The way I figured it though, I was up early and so it didn’t really count as eating into my Me Time. I still wasn’t on the clock, as it were.
Here comes the fun though. Around 10:00 my BF came by to pick me up and take me to a garden centre. A real one, where the staff actually know about plants and stuff. She helped me pick out some pierrenials for my Under the Tree garden. I got some hosta, ferns, dwarf goat’s beard, and some other stuff that I don’t know the names of, but they’re pretty.
When we got back here, we talked about gardening and life in general over some wine (me) and beer (her). We sat out on my deck, a gorgeously warm, sunny day and just had a good ol’ fashion hen party. By the time she went home it was almost 3:00pm.
After she left, I put my feet up and watched some televsion. There was absolutely nothing of interest on. Who knew that there was nothing good on tv at 3 on a Saturday afternoon? I managed to channel surf for 20 minutes before I was bored to tears and went out and started some much needed weeding.
After about 40 minutes of that, I came back in and started this post. This has been the first quarter of my me time and honestly, yes…I miss them and I’m bored.
I’m so pathetic. 😀

When everything is upside down and over turned
I become the someone for which I’ve always yearned
It’s funny how I find myself stronger than I ever thought
When confronted with situations that I never sought
Things just happen, life just sort of is
And I must like it this way
Because when I just go with the flow
It is always easier to know
That things just happen, life just sort of is
And I must like it this way
When life makes the least kind of sense
When I’m sure that there is no pretense
Things just happen and life just sort of is
And I must like it this way

I miss Hubby.
It’s not very sensible, but I seem to miss him more now when I know he’s partying and hanging out with his buddies than I did when he goes away for work. I mean, back in March he was gone for 10 days and I didn’t feel like this until at least day 5 or 6.
Plus, he’ll be home in less than 24 hours. No, it’s not sensible. Nonetheless…
I miss Hubby.
Of course I sincerely hope he’s having a great time. I also hope he’s missing me too, even if it’s just a little bit.
I’m shaking my own head at myself.
